If you have lived in Garner for more than a season, August usually reads the same: pool, cookout, one Friday movie at Lake Benson, back to school. This August is a little different. A road closure is rerouting the east side of town, two national food brands are staking claims on Timber Drive and White Oak, and the boathouse you keep meaning to visit changes its Friday hours the week you finally get free. Here is how to reshuffle the next six weeks so none of it catches you off guard.
The Friday Everyone Should Already Have Blocked
The next Friday Family Flicks at Lake Benson Park is The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on August 14, 2026, from 7:15 p.m. to 10:15 p.m. Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources runs free activities in the hour before the film starts, so families who arrive at 6:15 with a blanket get the full evening. If you have never done one, the setup is simple: Lake Benson Park sits at 921 Buffaloe Road, a 64-acre park with large open space, 1.8 miles of paved and unpaved trails, two playgrounds and four picnic shelters. Park on the far side of the lawn, walk in through the trees, claim your patch of grass before the sun drops behind the tree line.
Two smaller flicks-adjacent notes worth knowing:
- The town's other flagship park events at Lake Benson include the Spring Eggstravaganza, the Independence Day Celebration, and Friday Family Flicks and Camping, so if August 14 gets rained out, the fall replacement slot tends to fill quickly.
- The Garner Veterans Memorial, dedicated in May 2013, is inside the same park, and it is worth a five-minute walk on your way back to the car.
The Boathouse Detail Most Residents Miss
Here is the quiet twist that catches people out every summer. The Lake Benson Boathouse at 975 Buffaloe Road is open seasonally for boating and fishing from mid-March through October, with hours of Friday noon to 7 p.m., Saturday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday noon to 7 p.m. Friday operations are suspended during July and August.
Read that last line again. If your plan was to knock off work at 3 p.m. on a Friday in August and rent a jon boat, it will not happen. You have Saturday and Sunday for the next six weeks, and the boathouse closes back up in October. That is a smaller window than most people assume when they say "we'll get out there before summer ends."
Practically, that means the best boating slot left on the calendar is Saturday morning between 7 and 10 a.m., before the heat lands and the shelters start filling with birthday parties.
Routing note for the east side: East Garner Road between Auburn Knightdale Road and Rock Quarry Road is closed for approximately 45 days starting July 13. If your normal loop to White Deer Park or Lake Benson runs that corridor, rebuild it now. The town has also flagged road closures for the N.C. 50 bridge project affecting U.S. 70 and the Complete 540 project affecting East Garner Road, which together make the east and southeast approaches slower than the map suggests through the end of summer.
Two New Addresses To Learn Before Fall
The Garner food map is shifting in a specific direction: national chains are betting on the White Oak and Timber Drive corridors while the independents hold downtown. Two arrivals worth putting on your radar.
Dave's Hot Chicken, White Oak Shopping Center. Dave's Hot Chicken is building a standalone at White Oak Shopping Center in Garner, in front of Cabela's/Bass Pro Shops near the LongHorn. No open date has been announced yet, and the brand already has locations in Wake Forest and Holly Springs. The Wake Forest and Holly Springs stores routinely run 20-minute lines on Friday nights, so expect the same energy at White Oak once the doors open.
Whataburger, 79 Inspiration Drive. The Texas chain is heading east. It is adding a spot at 79 Inspiration Drive in Garner, according to reporting by the Triangle Business Journal. The chain first entered the state with a location in Gastonia in May. Whataburger has been surging east with its openings and is expected to unveil locations in the Raleigh area in 2026. Inspiration Drive is the Highway 42 side of town, close enough to Cleveland-area commuters that the drive-thru will be a factor from day one.
Neither is a substitute for what already works in Garner. Think of them as new entries in a rotation, not replacements.
A Working Rotation For The Rest Of Summer
Here is a compact way to think about where to eat when. The point is not that these places compete with each other — they do different jobs on different nights.

When August weather kills a Lake Benson plan, the Garner Performing Arts Center is the fallback most residents forget they have. The building sits downtown, close enough to Main Street that you can pair a show with dinner without moving the car twice.
Two GPAC-adjacent things happening this summer worth flagging:
- Broadway Bound: Summer Theatre Camp runs July 13 through July 17, 2026, which is useful context if you are trying to book a family dinner near the center that week.
- Friday Family Flicks is a free outdoor movie run by Garner Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, with free activities offered one hour prior to the movie start time, and several of the upcoming dates use the Garner Recreation Center as the alternate venue when weather threatens Lake Benson.
The Downtown Music Layer
The other rhythm you might have missed: Groovin' in Garner is back on Main Street. Groovin' in Garner Welcomes Jim Quick & Coastline on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. at 215 W Main St, and the concert series continues to program local and touring acts on the same block through the summer. It is the closest thing Garner has to a standing weekly ritual downtown, and the crowd skews to residents rather than day-trippers, which is why it stays comfortable even when the bill is strong.
If you want a bigger stage, Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek is technically inside Garner's borders and carries the loudest late-summer bookings in the region, but that is a different kind of night out with a different parking calculus.
A Saturday You Can Actually Run This Month
Put it together and one workable August Saturday looks like this:
- 7:30 a.m. Boathouse at Lake Benson, one hour on the water before the heat.
- 9:30 a.m. Breakfast at Big Ed's on Timber Drive.
- 11 a.m. Errands on the White Oak corridor, watching for the Dave's Hot Chicken build progress in front of the LongHorn.
- Afternoon Rest, or walk the shaded loops at White Deer Park if the day cools.
- 6 p.m. Blanket at Lake Benson for the next Friday Family Flicks slot, or a Playhouse show at GPAC if the sky turns.
- Late Aversboro or Locked & Loaded for one drink and live music.
None of that requires the east side of town, which is what makes it work while East Garner Road is closed. Rebuild the route around Timber Drive and Buffaloe Road and the closure stops mattering.
