Two addresses on Garner's Main Street cover most of the 2026 holiday season. On Saturday, November 28, it starts at 120 E Main St, where the Downtown Garner Association holds Light Up Main. One Saturday later, on December 5, it moves to 215 W Main St. The Town's Holiday Block Party fills the Garner Recreation Center grounds there before the Christmas Parade comes down Main Street.
The two days work differently. November 28 is a slow afternoon of shopping that ends with a tree lighting at 6:00. December 5 is a four-hour handoff from one event to the next. Road closures, a parking lot that traps cars and three approved railroad crossings shape that day more than the posted start times do.
The Two Saturdays Side by Side
| Saturday, November 28 | Saturday, December 5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Event | Light Up Main: Small Business Saturday and Annual Tree Lighting | Holiday Block Party, then the Garner Christmas Parade |
| Host | Downtown Garner Association | Town of Garner, then the Garner Optimist Club |
| Anchor address | 120 E Main St | Garner Recreation Center, 215 W Main St, and Main Street |
| Hours | 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., with shopping all day | Block Party 2:00 to 4:30 p.m.; parade at 4:30 p.m. |
| The fixed moment | Tree lighting at 6:00 p.m. | Parade start at 4:30 p.m. |
| Cost | Free family event | Block Party listed as a free family-friendly event |
The Downtown Garner Association's event page still shows "Dec 5, 2025" in its header, a leftover from last year. The details on the page and its calendar link both give Saturday, November 28, 2026, 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. If you saved the date from that header, change it.
November 28 Starts With Shopping and Ends With the Tree
According to the Downtown Garner Association's Light Up Main listing, Small Business Saturday runs all day. Food trucks and vendors will be added as they are confirmed. Santa visits participating locations between 3:00 and 5:30. The live entertainment comes from local choirs, dancers, musicians and performance groups, and the listing asks people to bring chairs. At 5:55, Santa leads the Very Merry Read-a-Loud, sponsored by Banks Bed & Breakfast. At 6:00, Mayor Buddy Gupton and Santa light the Town tree.
Because the shopping lasts all day and the ceremony comes at the end, you can spend the earlier hours moving between storefronts. The Downtown Garner business directory, in the version published in February 2026, lists these independents within a short walk of each other:
- Full Bloom Coffee, 141 W. Main St.
- Nana's Lil Sweets, 105 W. Main St.
- STEEP RIGHT UP, 111 W. Main St., Suite 200
- pedal to petal, a bicycle repair and flower shop, 122 E. Main St., next door to the event's anchor address
- Shady's Bar, 106 E. Main St.
- Zin Yoga Studio & Wine Lounge, 104 Rand Mill Rd.
The directory is the Association's own list. Hours and holiday specials are worth checking with each business closer to the date, because a February listing may not reflect every change since.
Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, so Light Up Main comes two days after the holiday. For families with guests in town over the long weekend, it's a free downtown afternoon with a set 6:00 finish.
December 5 Runs as One Four-Hour Afternoon
The second Saturday starts at a different spot. The Holiday Block Party is based at the Garner Recreation Center, 215 W Main St. The Town lists holiday kids' crafts, food trucks, games and music, plus the Garner Express train ride around the outdoor walking trail and a Santa visit for family photos. The parade's official site says this year's parade includes the Town's Block Party, starting at 2 p.m.
Here is the afternoon in order:
- 12:30 p.m. A small section of Purvis Street closes to all traffic. It stays closed until about 6:30 p.m.
- 2:00 p.m. The Holiday Block Party opens at Garner Recreation Center.
- About 4:00 p.m. Main Street closes for the parade. Cars parked in the Main Street lot at Garner Baseball Inc. cannot leave until about 6:00.
- 4:30 p.m. The Block Party ends and the Garner Christmas Parade begins on Main Street.
- 6:00 p.m. The parade ends, according to the Garner Optimist Club's calendar.
The Optimist Club runs the parade, and the 2026 participant list is built around "Tradition, Community, and Home." The club also lists the safety checks it has used since 2022 on the recommendation of the Garner Police Department. Parade drivers must show a license and be over 30, vehicles must have current registration and inspection, and there are wide gaps between vehicles and walking groups. As of mid-October, the site's Parade Day Information section, which will carry the route map and parade road closures, still reads "Coming Soon." Check it again in late November before choosing a spot along the curb.
The Railroad Tracks Decide Where You Park
The Town lists five places to park for December 5. Garner Recreation Center has accessible parking. The Main Street lot at Garner Baseball Inc. is closest to the parade, and it is the one that locks cars in from about 4:00 to 6:00. The other three, Avery Street Recreation Center & Park, Garner Senior Center and Garner Recreational Park, are across the railroad tracks from the event.
The Town's Holiday Block Party page states the rule plainly:
"Safe crossing points are located at Highway 50/Benson Rd., St. Mary's Street, and New Rand Road. Please only cross at these points and do not climb the fencing."
That means your choice of lot is really a choice of how you leave. The Garner Baseball lot puts you near the parade, but you can't drive out until the street reopens. The three lots across the tracks aren't the one the Town flags for the parade lockout, but getting to them means walking to one of three crossings, which adds steps for families with strollers or small children. For anyone who needs a quiet break during the day, the Town also publishes a Holiday Block Party Sensory Guidebook.
The Weeks Around Those Two Saturdays
The rest of Garner's fall calendar fills the gaps before, between and after the two big days.
Before Thanksgiving. On Friday, October 16, the Town holds Diwali at Garner Recreation Center, 215 W Main Street, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Trick or Treat the Trail is on Saturday, October 31, from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. at White Deer Park, 2400 Aversboro Road. The Veterans Day Observance is Wednesday, November 11, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Aversboro Road Baptist Church, 1600 Aversboro Road.
The tree lot. The Garner Optimist Club's tree lot at 2110 Vandora Springs Road opens Sunday, November 22, at noon and runs through Sunday, December 13, at 8 p.m. That puts its opening six days before Light Up Main and its closing eight days after the parade. The same Optimist Club runs both the lot and the parade, and the parade site points visitors to the lot. The daily hours on the lot's page are weekdays 4 to 8 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sundays noon to 8 p.m., closed Thanksgiving and open Black Friday. That text carries opening and closing dates that don't match the 2026 listing, so the hours may be from a past season. Confirm them before a weekday evening trip.
Garner Performing Arts Center. GPAC, at 742 W. Garner Road, has shows on the weekends around both Saturdays:
| Date | Show | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, October 23 | Devine & Dexterous featuring Camille Thurman & The Christian Tamburr Quintet | 7:00 p.m. |
| Saturday, October 24 | An Evening with Kathy Mattea | 7:30 p.m. |
| Friday, November 13 | Broken Compass Bluegrass | 7:30 p.m. |
| Saturday, November 14 | Southern Shade of Blue: Carrie Marshall | 7:30 p.m. |
| Friday, December 11 | My Favorite Things featuring Shana Tucker and the Christian Tamburr Quintet | 7:30 p.m. |
| Saturday, December 19 | An Unexpected Christmas | 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. |
The December shows fall after the parade. Shana Tucker's set is the Friday after December 5. The two performances of An Unexpected Christmas on December 19 come six days after the tree lot closes and make up the latest date in this lineup.
